About The Role

The post holder will be responsible for the assessment of patient care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of care in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team. The role will require the post holder to demonstrate proficient and expert clinical skills and role model Cleveland Clinic London values at all times to ensure high quality patient care and experience.

The post holder will be required to perform clinical duties as a scrub and circulating nurse across a range of speciality throughout the invasive labs, this includes the Cardiac Catheterisation and Electrophysiology, Interventional Radiology Lab and the Hybrid theatre.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide high standards of individualised nursing care for patients by assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care.
  • Provide advice and education to patients, ensuring they are actively involved in their plan of care and recovery.
  • Act as an advocate for patients at all times, to ensure a patient orientated approach to the delivery of care.
  • Prioritise tasks effectively, including the workload of others where required, such as learners and Healthcare Assistants.
  • Be responsible for assessing and recognising emergencies, interpreting information, taking appropriate action and escalating concerns in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for all aspects of own practice and delivery of high quality, effective and compassionate patient care.
  • Practice in a manner that embraces the vision, values and strategic priorities of Cleveland Clinic London and the respective Institute.
  • Undertake relevant training and competency assessments to perform and work safely in accordance with policies and protocols.
  • Ensure that all patient outcomes are recorded accurately on both the patient electronic system (Epic – Cupid and Radiant) and status board.
  • Be responsible for maintaining a safe environment for patients, visitors, vendors and other Caregivers within the department.
  • Perform scrub and circulating nurse duties in the labs.
  • Taking charge in the absence of the Sister/Charge Nurse and act as a Team Leader in the lab.


    Compliance and Governance


  • Ensure incidents and near misses are reported and encourage others to do so whilst promoting a no blame culture.
  • Encourage others to speak up and voice concerns.
  • Ensure that patient’s health records are treated with sensitivity and maintain patient confidentiality at all times, in accordance with the the Data Protection Act 2018/General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
  • Be familiar with the Hospital/department fire escalation plan, manual handling, and infection control and health and safety policies/procedures.
  • Take all possible precautions to safeguard the welfare and safety of patients, Caregivers, visitors and vendors, by implementing all policies related to health, safety, security and risk.
  • Have a working knowledge of Radiation Protection and local rules, ensuring these are followed for the protection of self, patients, visitors and other Caregivers.
  • Ensure that the hospital’s policy is understood and carried out with regard to the care and custody of drugs/medications, especially with regard to Controlled drugs.
  • Be fully conversant with the major incident plan, and be able to guide fellow Caregivers through this process.
  • Contribute to policy and practice changes arising from audits, complaints, requests or new evidence.


    Communication
  • Communicate in a professional manner with patients, Caregivers and visitors at all times.
  • Communicate effectively with the Nurse in Charge/ Cath lab coordinator to ensure any charges to the list is communicated to the Lab team and relevant department.
  • Maintain excellent communication with the multidisciplinary team and other departments to ensure a seamless service for our patients.
  • Attend/participate in departmental huddles, team meetings, team brief and debrief.

About You

Education, Audit and Research

  • Act as a mentor and clinical supervisor for Caregivers and provide constructive feedback on practice to inform learning.
  • Induct and orientate new Caregivers effectively using a structured induction plan.
  • Support the development of clinical competency and assessment of other Caregivers where relevant.
  • Complete the required mandatory training and attend any relevant study days/training sessions.
  • Be aware of evidence based research and current national developments within the speciality and utilise this knowledge to inform practice and disseminate relevant information to other Caregivers.
  • Actively participate in departmental audits i.e. hand hygiene, WHO checklist, team brief/De- briefing.

    Personal and Professional Development


  • Maintain high standards of professional practice and adhere to the Nursing and Midwifery “The Code”.
  • Take accountability for own practice in line with the NMC code of professional conduct, revalidation and takes opportunity to sustain and improve own knowledge and professional competence.
  • Take responsibility for self-development through the appraisal system and work towards completing agreed personal development plan.
  • Keep up to date with current literature and research within the specialty.
  • Develop new skills and knowledge pertaining to the speciality as advised by the Department Manager.


    Education:
  • Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.

    Certifications:
  • Nursing registration (First Level) through the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) required.

    Languages:
  • Ability to speak and write in English is required.

  • Ability to work autonomously and also within a team environment where appropriate.
  • Ability to prioritize workload in a complex environment and work under pressure where required, ensuring high quality, safe and effective patient care.
  • Demonstrates initiative to proactively problem solve with a solution focus, escalating more complex issues as required.
  • Can effectively manage and respond to patients and visitors with challenging behaviour and know when to call for assistance.
  • Being reliable and flexible, demonstrating enthusiasm and commitment.


    Work Experience:
  • Previous/current experience of working as a scrub and circulating nurse in either the Cardiac Cath Lab, Interventional Radiology (IR) Lab, Neuro interventional Radiology or the Hybrid Lab/Theatre essential.
  • Competent in/have had exposure to the use of electronic clinical systems (EPIC, similar modern clinical systems) desirable.


    Personal Protective Equipment


  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
  • Wears lead protection aprons in radiation areas
Physical Requirements:

  • Moving patients from chair to trolley/bed and from trolley/bed to X-ray table.
  • Manoeuvring wheelchairs and patient trolleys/bed.
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination skills.
  • Regular use of display screen equipment (DSE).
